History & Background
Majestic Falls is a 39-foot block-style waterfall in McDowell Creek Falls County Park, one of three named waterfalls in this exceptional Linn County park east of Sweet Home. The park preserves a beautiful stretch of McDowell Creek that drops through a series of dramatic falls in quick succession — Royal Terrace Falls (119 ft) is the crown jewel, followed by Majestic Falls, then Lower Falls. The name ‘Majestic’ is well-earned: the falls spread across a wide basalt ledge in a broad curtain before spilling into an attractive pool. The Linn County park was developed to provide public access to this exceptional concentration of waterfalls in the Cascade foothills, and the well-maintained trail system makes all three falls accessible to hikers of most ability levels.
Geology
Majestic Falls spreads across a wide, broad block ledge of Western Cascades volcanic basalt at approximately 840 feet elevation. The block form of the falls — water spreading evenly across the full channel width — reflects a particularly smooth, wide section of resistant basalt that the creek has not yet incised. McDowell Creek flows through the older Western Cascades volcanic geology of the South Santiam foothills, and the three falls in the park reflect successive resistant rock ledges at different elevations along the creek. The surrounding forest of Douglas fir, bigleaf maple, and red alder creates a lush canopy over the trail.
