History & Background
Lower Falls is a broad block-style waterfall in McDowell Creek Falls County Park, one of the most underrated waterfall destinations in the Oregon Cascades foothills east of Sweet Home in Linn County. The park, managed by Linn County, preserves a stunning stretch of McDowell Creek that hosts multiple named waterfalls including Royal Terrace Falls (119 ft), Majestic Falls (30 ft), and Lower Falls — each accessible by a well-maintained trail system that winds through the forested canyon. McDowell Creek drains the forested hills above the South Santiam River valley in a landscape with a long history of homesteading and timber harvesting. The falls are close to the main trail and easily accessible for hikers of all ability levels.
Geology
Lower Falls spreads as a broad block waterfall across the full width of McDowell Creek at approximately 795 feet elevation in the western Cascade foothills of Linn County. The block form reflects a wide, resistant rock ledge across the creek channel, creating a uniform low cascade. McDowell Creek flows through the Western Cascades volcanic geology characteristic of the South Santiam foothills — older, eroded volcanic rocks that the creek has incised over millions of years. The surrounding forest of Douglas fir, bigleaf maple, and red alder with a lush fern understory is characteristic of these moist, mid-elevation western Oregon streams.
