History & Background
Shellburg Falls is a spectacular 100-foot plunge waterfall with a walk-behind trail on Shellburg Creek in the Cascade foothills of Marion County, near the North Santiam River corridor between Mehama and Detroit. The falls plunge into a mossy amphitheater, and a maintained trail passes directly behind the curtain of water through the basalt cave — making this one of the few walk-behind waterfall experiences outside of Silver Falls State Park that is easily accessible to general visitors. The Forest Development Fund lands surrounding the falls were significantly affected by the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire, one of Oregon’s most destructive wildfires, which burned extensively through this corridor. Post-fire restoration work has progressively reopened access to the falls, though visitors should check current conditions and be alert for hazard trees throughout the fire-affected area. The falls and the nearby Lower Shellburg Falls (40 ft) make an excellent combined destination.
Geology
Shellburg Falls plunges 100 feet over a resistant basalt ledge at approximately 1,100 feet elevation on Shellburg Creek. Like the walk-behind falls at Silver Falls State Park, the cave behind Shellburg Falls was created by the erosion of softer rock beneath the hard basalt cap — water seeping between layers softens the underlying material, which gradually erodes and retreats, creating the natural amphitheater. The 2020 Beachie Creek Fire altered the surrounding forest substantially, with recovering understory vegetation and standing snags creating the dramatically changed landscape visible throughout the corridor.
