History & Background
Spirit Falls is a beautiful 40-foot horsetail in the Layng Creek watershed of the Umpqua National Forest, the most accessible and atmospheric of the trio of waterfalls — Spirit, Moon, and Pinard — that make the Layng Creek basin east of Cottage Grove one of Oregon’s finest waterfall day-trip destinations. Spirit Falls drops over a smoothly rounded basalt cliff face, its wide, veil-like curtain creating a misty grotto at the base that inspired the evocative name. The Layng Creek basin serves as the municipal water supply for Cottage Grove, prohibiting camping and swimming throughout the watershed. Spirit Falls is the first waterfall encountered on the road network into the basin and has a conveniently located trailhead with a short, easy approach.
Geology
Spirit Falls drops 40 feet over a smoothly rounded volcanic basalt cliff at approximately 1,600 feet elevation on a tributary of Layng Creek. The smooth, rounded character of the basalt cliff contrasts with the jagged, angular face at nearby Moon Falls — the two different cliff geometries producing dramatically different waterfall aesthetics despite being formed from the same geological material. The creek feeding Spirit Falls drains from the southern Lane County hills and runs most strongly from winter through early summer before diminishing significantly.
