History & Background
Lower Natural Bridge Falls is a small plunge waterfall near the Natural Bridge area of the upper Rogue River near Prospect in Jackson County. Natural Bridge is one of the Rogue River’s most remarkable geological features — a section where the river disappears entirely into a lava tube for a short distance before re-emerging, creating a natural ‘bridge’ of rock across the river. The Natural Bridge Campground and recreation area is managed by the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and provides access to this extraordinary geological site, as well as to the Rogue River Trail that connects downstream toward Crater Lake. The upper Rogue corridor near Prospect has been used for recreation since the late 19th century, and the natural bridge and nearby falls are among the most visited features of the upper Rogue.
Geology
Lower Natural Bridge Falls drops over a lava ledge on the upper Rogue River at approximately 3,400 feet elevation in the volcanic landscape below Crater Lake. The entire Natural Bridge area is dominated by young volcanic geology — lava flows from the Crater Lake (Mount Mazama) eruption approximately 7,700 years ago covered this section of the Rogue River, creating the lava tube that forms Natural Bridge and the various ledges and falls downstream. The surrounding forest of ponderosa pine, white fir, and lodgepole pine transitions to the higher-elevation subalpine environment of Crater Lake just miles to the northeast.
