History & Background
Fall Creek Falls is a spectacular multi-tiered plunge waterfall on Fall Creek, a tributary of the North Umpqua River, located just off Highway 138 near Idleyld Park. It is one of the most accessible and rewarding waterfall hikes along the famous North Umpqua Highway corridor, where a series of exceptional waterfalls — Susan Creek Falls, Fall Creek Falls, Deadline Falls, Toketee Falls, Watson Falls, and more — are strung together along one of Oregon’s most scenic drives. The Fall Creek Falls National Recreation Trail (Trail #1502) passes through the burn scar of the 2020 Archie Creek Fire, which devastated portions of Douglas County; the trail was closed for recovery and reopened in April 2022. The surrounding old-growth forest of Douglas fir, hemlock, and sugar pine, some trees exceeding six feet in diameter, is being supplemented by fire-recovery vegetation.
Geology
Fall Creek Falls drops in multiple tiers over volcanic and metamorphic basement rock of the North Umpqua watershed at approximately 1,361 feet elevation. The multi-tiered character reflects several resistant rock ledges at different elevations as the creek descends steeply to its confluence with the North Umpqua River. The lower 50-foot tier is the most dramatic, visible from the trail base, while a viewing platform above provides perspective on the second major tier. The surrounding canyon walls display the rugged volcanic geology characteristic of the Umpqua highlands, and the creek maintains clear, cold water prized for swimming in summer.
