History & Background
Ti’lomikh Falls is a modest set of rapids and cascade on the Rogue River near Shady Cove, but its significance far exceeds its modest height. Ti’lomikh — sometimes spelled Takelma or Tilomikh — was the most important tribal gathering site of the Takelma people for thousands of years, a place where families assembled each spring to harvest the abundant Chinook salmon that congregated below the falls. The Takelma name translates roughly as ‘those who live along the river’ and their deep connection to this specific place on the Rogue was central to their identity and culture. The Rogue River Indian Wars of 1855–56 were fought in part over access to the river and its salmon, and the forced removal of the Takelma and other Rogue River tribes to the Grand Ronde Reservation represents one of Oregon’s most painful chapters. Today, the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde maintain a cultural connection to Ti’lomikh, and the site has been recognized for its deep historical significance.
Geology
Ti’lomikh Falls cascades about 8 feet over a volcanic rock ledge at approximately 1,300 feet elevation on the upper Rogue River near Shady Cove. The upper Rogue here flows through the older volcanic and metamorphic terrain of Jackson County before widening into the valley at Shady Cove. The falls create a hydraulic concentration in the river that historically made salmon vulnerable to traditional fishing methods, explaining the site’s central importance to Rogue River tribes.

- Trail Information:
- There are two places to easily view Ti’lomikh falls; a short trail from the Ti’lomikh falls river access and parking area just north of the town of Gold Hill leads to views of the falls and rapids. Head north on the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway from Gold Hill, the parking lot is easy to find just past the Gold Hill Sports Park if coming from the south.
- A second viewing location has better views of the larger lower falls that can’t be seen easily from the west side of the river. To access this view head back into Gold Hills, head east on 2nd ave and cross the bridge. Take your first sharp left onto Upper River Road, you should see the Fishin Oregon Rogue River Fishing Guides building on your left. Contiue until you see an easily visible pullout on the lefthand side of the road here, called the Story Telling Stone at Ti’lomikh Falls. You can read about the history of the area, visit the small sculpture garden, and get a better view of the falls, however from further away.
