History & Background
Grotto Falls is one of the highlights of the Little River ‘Waterfall Alley’ — a remarkable concentration of waterfalls accessible along Little River Road (County Road 17) east of Glide in Douglas County. The 78-foot plunge drops into a beautifully sculpted grotto, a natural rock amphitheater carved by the falling water and the pool below, giving the falls their evocative name. The Little River corridor has been an important recreation destination in the Umpqua National Forest since the mid-20th century, and the Umpqua National Forest manages this stretch of the watershed to balance timber production, recreation, and the exceptional fish habitat values of the Little River. Grotto Falls is one of the most visited and photographed falls on the Little River Road, and is ideal for waterfall seekers of all ages.
Geology
Grotto Falls plunges into its carved amphitheater over a volcanic and metamorphic ledge in the Little River watershed at approximately 2,400 feet elevation. The plunge pool has been sculpted over thousands of years by the hydraulic force of the falling water drilling into the bedrock — the same process that creates the characteristic caves and grottos found behind many plunge falls. The surrounding mixed conifer forest of Douglas fir, sugar pine, white fir, and incense cedar reflects the transitional character of the southern Oregon Cascades, which lies between the wetter western Cascades and the drier Klamath Mountains geological province.
