History & Background
Grave Creek Falls is a small cascade on the Rogue River in Josephine County, encountered along the legendary 40-mile Rogue River National Recreation Trail that stretches from Grave Creek to Foster Bar. The Rogue River was among the original eight rivers designated under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968, recognizing its outstanding natural, scenic, and recreational values. The Grave Creek Trailhead — the eastern starting point of the famous Rogue trail — sits near Galice, approximately 23 miles from Grants Pass. The first 1.7 miles of the trail from Grave Creek reach Rainie Falls, one of the Rogue’s most powerful rapids and a destination in itself. Grave Creek Falls is encountered further along the trail, a small cascade in the dramatic canyon. The entire lower Rogue corridor was affected by the catastrophic 2020 Almeda Fire, which burned towns and forest along the river.
Geology
Grave Creek Falls cascades over the ancient metamorphic and volcanic rocks of the Klamath Mountains, the geologically complex range that underlies the Wild Rogue canyon. The first five miles of the Rogue River Trail from Grave Creek pass over rocks of the Rogue Formation — a result of ancient volcanic activity in this exceptionally old geological terrane. The Wild Rogue canyon itself has been carved by the river over millions of years through these resistant Klamath Mountain rocks, creating steep walls and dramatic rapids. The 2020 Almeda Fire burned portions of the riverside landscape, altering the character of the trail corridor.
