History & Background
Proxy Falls is one of Oregon’s most photographed waterfalls and a standout feature of the Three Sisters Wilderness area. The waterfall’s name comes from Proxy Creek, which disappears underground through porous lava fields before reemerging dramatically at the falls. Access is seasonal due to snow, and the trailhead is typically closed until McKenzie Pass Road opens in late spring or early summer.
Geology
Proxy Falls spills over a cliff of highly porous volcanic rock formed by relatively young lava flows from the nearby Three Sisters volcanic region. Much of Proxy Creek flows underground through lava tubes before emerging at the falls, contributing to its powerful but seasonal flow. The surrounding lava fields, moss-covered rocks, and old-growth forest create a unique and striking geological setting.
