History & Background
Wizard Falls is a modest 6-foot cascade on the Metolius River near Camp Sherman — a name far more dramatic than the falls themselves, but perfectly chosen for one of Oregon’s most magical rivers. The Metolius springs fully formed from underground at the base of Black Butte, emerging as a full river from a hillside spring at a constant temperature and volume regardless of season, never swelling with rain or drought. The Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery, named for the falls, is a state-operated facility just downstream that raises Atlantic salmon, kokanee, and rainbow trout. The Metolius River corridor is renowned for world-class fly fishing, and the combination of wild-feeling springs, cold clear water, and the enchanting ponderosa pine setting around Camp Sherman has made this one of Central Oregon’s most beloved natural areas.
Geology
Wizard Falls cascades 6 feet over a basaltic ledge on the Metolius River at approximately 2,900 feet elevation. The Metolius carries water filtered through the porous volcanic geology of the upper Cascade plateau, emerging from springs at a constant 46°F year-round — giving the river its remarkable clarity and cold consistency. The Central Oregon volcanic landscape here transitions from the forested Cascades to the more open high desert east of Black Butte, and the ponderosa pine parkland with its thin, sandy volcanic soils creates the distinctive Camp Sherman aesthetic.
