History & Background
Pearsoney Falls is a small horsetail cascade on Mill Creek approximately a quarter mile upstream of the towering 173-foot Mill Creek Falls at Prospect State Scenic Viewpoint. The falls were named for two pioneering families who settled the Prospect area — the Pearsons and the Mooneys — whose combined name became ‘Pearsoney.’ The falls split around a small island in the creek, with the main flow to one side and a secondary channel that may run dry in late summer. While modest compared to the dramatic Mill Creek Falls and Barr Creek Falls nearby, Pearsoney Falls is easily accessible from the upper trailhead on Mill Creek Road and rewards a short walk through the mixed conifer forest of the upper Rogue corridor.
Geology
Pearsoney Falls cascades about 12 feet over a low volcanic ledge on Mill Creek at approximately 2,481 feet elevation in the upper Rogue River volcanic landscape. Mill Creek drains from the highlands near Huckleberry Mountain on the western slopes of the Crater Lake environs, flowing through young volcanic deposits and pumice layers before plunging dramatically over the Rogue River canyon rim as Mill Creek Falls downstream. The surrounding forest of Douglas fir, incense cedar, and ponderosa pine reflects the transitional character of the mid-elevation upper Rogue basin.
