History & Background
North Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Silver Falls State Park and is known for its powerful plunge and dramatic amphitheater setting. The park was developed in the early 20th century as a public recreation area, and the Trail of Ten Falls was designed to highlight the canyon’s series of waterfalls. North Falls has become a favorite stop along the loop due to its close proximity to the trailhead and its thundering flow during wet months.
Geology
North Falls plunges over layers of Columbia River Basalt, similar to other waterfalls in the park. Over time, erosion has carved a deep recess behind the waterfall, allowing visitors to walk partially behind the cascade. The surrounding canyon walls expose multiple lava flows stacked atop one another, offering a clear look at the volcanic history of the region.
