History & Background
Ecola Falls is one of the lesser-known waterfalls within Silver Falls State Park, often overlooked in favor of the park’s larger and more famous falls. Despite its smaller size, Ecola Falls plays an important role in the Trail of Ten Falls system and contributes to the park’s reputation as one of Oregon’s premier waterfall destinations. Its quieter setting makes it a pleasant stop for hikers completing the full loop.
Geology
Ecola Falls drops over layers of Columbia River Basalt, similar to the other waterfalls in Silver Falls State Park. The waterfall’s narrower flow reflects the smaller drainage area of Ecola Creek, but the surrounding rock layers clearly display the stacked lava flows that define the canyon. Erosion over time has carved a shallow alcove behind the falls.
