History & Background
Abiqua Falls is one of Oregon’s most visually striking waterfalls, known for its circular basalt amphitheater and remote setting. The waterfall has grown in popularity over the years due to its unique geology and dramatic appearance. Access routes have changed over time, and the surrounding land has included a mix of public and private ownership, making it important for visitors to research current conditions before attempting a visit.
Geology
Abiqua Falls plunges into a near-perfect basalt amphitheater formed by erosion of layered volcanic rock. Over time, Abiqua Creek carved through these lava layers, creating a rounded, bowl-like canyon that amplifies the waterfall’s visual impact. The exposed rock walls clearly display stacked basalt flows typical of the Cascade foothills, making this site a standout for geology enthusiasts and photographers.
