History & Background
Tumalo Falls is one of the most popular and easily accessible waterfalls in Central Oregon. Located within the Deschutes National Forest, the falls have long been a favorite destination for locals and visitors due to their short approach and scenic canyon setting. The area is also historically significant for early irrigation and forestry efforts in the region, with remnants of old infrastructure still visible along nearby trails.
Geology
Tumalo Falls plunges over volcanic rock formed by ancient lava flows from the Cascade Range. The canyon carved by Tumalo Creek exposes layers of basalt and other volcanic material, creating a rugged and picturesque setting. The surrounding landscape reflects Central Oregon’s dry climate, with ponderosa pine forests and rocky outcrops framing the falls.
