History & Background
Latourell Falls is one of the most recognizable waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge and is named after the Latourell family, early settlers in the area during the late 1800s. The waterfall became a popular destination soon after the construction of the Historic Columbia River Highway, which opened access to the Gorge’s dramatic scenery. Today, the falls are preserved within Guy W. Talbot State Park and remain a favorite for visitors due to their striking appearance and easy access.
Geology
Latourell Falls plunges over prominent columnar basalt cliffs formed by ancient lava flows associated with the Columbia River Basalt Group. Unlike many Gorge waterfalls that cascade down layered rock faces, Latourell Falls drops in a single, uninterrupted plunge, highlighting the vertical basalt columns behind it. The exposed rock formations make this waterfall a standout example of Gorge geology.
