History & Background
Wooden Rock Creek Falls is a 60-foot roadside plunge near Gold Beach in Curry County, one of the few significant waterfalls accessible from the southern Oregon Coast corridor. Gold Beach is famous for the jet boat tours up the Wild and Scenic Rogue River, and the surrounding Curry County coast is defined by its dramatic sea stacks, rugged headlands, and the lush Klamath-Siskiyou forests inland. Wooden Rock Creek drains from the coastal mountains above Gold Beach and plunges over a cliff visible from the coast highway corridor, providing a surprising natural spectacle for travelers making the drive along the southern Oregon Coast.
Geology
Wooden Rock Creek Falls plunges 60 feet over a cliff face in the southern Oregon Coast Range at approximately 300 feet elevation near Gold Beach. The southern Coast Range here transitions toward the Klamath Mountains geological province — the complex ancient oceanic and metamorphic terrain that defines Curry County’s landscape. The surrounding forest of Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, and Oregon myrtle receives extraordinary annual precipitation from Pacific storms, sustaining the perennial creek flows.
