History & Background
Stasel Falls is a small plunge waterfall in the Cascade foothills of Marion County, near the North Santiam River corridor between Mehama and Detroit. The falls flow in one of the numerous tributary drainages of the North Santiam watershed that descend from the western Cascade foothills toward the valley. The North Santiam corridor experienced significant fire damage from the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire, one of Oregon’s most destructive wildfires, and the landscape around Stasel Falls may show fire-related changes including hazard trees. Despite the fire impact, the North Santiam corridor is progressively recovering and remains a beautiful recreation destination.
Geology
Stasel Falls plunges over a volcanic basalt ledge at approximately 1,400 feet elevation in the western Cascade foothills of Marion County. The surrounding forest — partially affected by the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire — is in active recovery, with regenerating understory vegetation and standing snags creating the dynamic post-fire landscape. The creek maintains good winter and spring flows from the forested uplands above before diminishing in the dry summer months.
