History & Background
Salmon Falls in the Willamette National Forest is a small roadside cascade on the Middle Fork Willamette River near Oakridge in Lane County, within a designated Wild and Scenic River corridor. The Middle Fork Willamette is one of Oregon’s premier wild steelhead and trout fisheries — a cold, clear river that drains from Waldo Lake and the high Cascades through a landscape of old-growth forest and exceptional wilderness character. Oakridge, at the western gateway to the Middle Fork corridor, is a former timber town better known today as one of North America’s premier mountain biking destinations. The falls provide a quick roadside natural feature along the scenic Middle Fork drive toward Hills Creek Reservoir and Waldo Lake.
Geology
Salmon Falls cascades over a basaltic bedrock riffle on the Middle Fork Willamette at approximately 1,500 feet elevation. The Middle Fork flows through older Western Cascades volcanic rock and maintains cold, clear water year-round from its spring-fed sources in the high Cascades above. The roadside setting near Oakridge reflects the transition zone between the wide Willamette Valley floor and the narrow mountain valley of the Middle Fork corridor.
