History & Background
Salmon Falls on the Little North Santiam River is a 24-foot plunge in the Salmon Falls Recreation Area of Marion County, along one of Oregon’s most scenic Cascade foothills river corridors. The Little North Santiam flows through the Opal Creek Wilderness area access corridor and provides one of the most productive wild steelhead and trout fisheries in the North Santiam watershed. The Salmon Falls Recreation Area — a BLM-managed site — offers camping and day-use access along the river, and the falls are the central natural feature. The North Santiam corridor was significantly affected by the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire, which burned extensively through the lower and middle North Santiam watershed; the Salmon Falls area may show fire-related changes to the surrounding forest.
Geology
Salmon Falls plunges 24 feet over a resistant basalt ledge on the Little North Santiam River at approximately 1,700 feet elevation in the western Cascade foothills. The Little North Santiam cuts through the older Western Cascades volcanic geology typical of this corridor. The 2020 Beachie Creek Fire altered the surrounding forest substantially, with standing snags interspersed with recovering understory vegetation visible throughout the area. The river maintains its remarkable clarity despite the fire impact, fed by springs in the relatively intact upper watershed.
