History & Background
Royal Terrace Falls is the tallest and most dramatic waterfall in McDowell Creek Falls County Park, plunging 119 feet as a tall horsetail over a basalt cliff into the forested canyon below. The name evokes the stately, tiered character of the falls — water spreading as it descends over ledges and mossy rock before reaching the pool below. Together with Majestic Falls (39 ft) and Lower Falls (10 ft) in the same park, Royal Terrace Falls is part of one of the most rewarding waterfall parks in the Oregon Cascades foothills. Linn County has developed the park with well-maintained trails, a footbridge, and interpretive signage, making this an accessible and family-friendly destination that rivals much better-known Oregon waterfall parks despite its modest visitor count.
Geology
Royal Terrace Falls horsetails 119 feet over a Western Cascades volcanic basalt cliff at approximately 870 feet elevation in the McDowell Creek drainage of Linn County. The falls’ height reflects a particularly dramatic resistant ledge across the creek’s gradient. McDowell Creek flows through the older, deeply eroded Western Cascades volcanic geology of the South Santiam foothills, and the three falls in the park represent successive resistant ledges at different points along the creek’s descent. The surrounding forest of Douglas fir, bigleaf maple, and red alder with a lush fern understory creates the quintessential western Oregon Cascades foothills ambiance.
