History & Background
Natural Bridge Falls is a plunge waterfall near the Natural Bridge recreation area on the upper Rogue River south of Prospect, one of the most geologically remarkable sites in Southern Oregon. The Natural Bridge itself is a short stretch where the Rogue River disappears entirely into a lava tube and re-emerges downstream, creating a natural rock arch across the river channel — one of the few such features in North America with a full-sized river flowing through it. The surrounding Rogue-Siskiyou National Forest manages a cluster of exceptional upper Rogue features accessible along Highway 62, including Natural Bridge, Natural Bridge Falls, the Avenue of the Giant Boulders, Mill Creek Falls, and Barr Creek Falls. The area sits along the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway, one of Oregon’s most rewarding scenic drives.
Geology
Natural Bridge Falls plunges over a lava ledge at approximately 3,230 feet elevation in the upper Rogue River corridor below Crater Lake. The entire Natural Bridge area is dominated by relatively young volcanic geology — lava flows and pyroclastic deposits associated with Cascade volcanism, including thick pumice layers from the Mount Mazama eruption 7,700 years ago. The lava tube through which the Rogue River flows at Natural Bridge reflects a common volcanic landform in this region, where molten lava hardened on the outside while still-flowing lava drained from the interior, leaving a hollow tube.
