History & Background
Moose Creek Falls is a small cascade in the Willamette National Forest of Linn County, in the South Santiam River watershed east of Sweet Home. The South Santiam corridor is a popular recreation destination for Willamette Valley residents, offering swimming holes, fishing, hiking, and scenic drives along Highway 20 toward the Cascades. Moose Creek is a tributary of the South Santiam, draining from the forested highlands above the valley through a landscape of second-growth Douglas fir and alder. The falls reflect the typical character of small western Cascade tributary streams — modest in height but set in beautiful forested surroundings.
Geology
Moose Creek Falls cascades over a volcanic basalt ledge in the South Santiam watershed at approximately 1,400 feet elevation in the western Cascade foothills. The surrounding forest of Douglas fir, bigleaf maple, and red alder with a lush understory of sword fern reflects the moist, mid-elevation western Oregon Cascades environment. The creek maintains reliable winter and spring flows before diminishing in the dry summer months typical of the western Cascades.
