History & Background
Lower Shellburg Falls is a roadside plunge waterfall on Shellburg Creek in the Cascade foothills of Marion County, near Mehama and the North Santiam River corridor. It is the downstream companion to the more famous Shellburg Falls, a 100-foot tall waterfall with a walk-behind trail that is one of the most spectacular in the North Santiam area. The Shellburg Creek corridor was devastated by the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire, which burned through much of this landscape, and both the access road and trails experienced significant damage and required restoration work. The falls are managed on Forest Development Fund land, and despite the fire impact, Shellburg Falls and Lower Shellburg Falls remained destinations as restoration work has gradually reopened access.
Geology
Lower Shellburg Falls plunges over a resistant basalt ledge on Shellburg Creek at approximately 750 feet elevation in the western Cascade foothills of Marion County. Shellburg Creek flows from the forested highlands above the North Santiam valley through volcanic basalt typical of the western Oregon Cascades. The creek maintains strong winter and spring flows fed by rainfall and snowmelt from the Cascade foothills. The 2020 Beachie Creek Fire burned the surrounding forest, creating a mosaic of standing snags and regenerating understory vegetation visible throughout the corridor.
