History & Background
Falls City Falls is the waterfall that gave the small community of Falls City its name. Located on the Little Luckiamute River within the town of Falls City in Polk County, the falls have been a local landmark since the earliest days of Euro-American settlement in this part of the Willamette Valley foothills. Falls City was platted in the 1880s, and early settlers recognized the falls as both a scenic attraction and a potential power source. Today Falls City is a quiet rural community of about 1,000 residents, and the falls are preserved as a community gathering place visible from the town bridge and accessed via a short path from the roadside. The Little Luckiamute River flows through the community on its way to join the Luckiamute River and ultimately the Willamette.
Geology
Falls City Falls plunges over a ledge of volcanic basalt on the Little Luckiamute River at approximately 380 feet elevation in the transition zone between the Willamette Valley floor and the Coast Range foothills. The Little Luckiamute watershed drains from the western slopes of the Coast Range, receiving substantial annual rainfall that sustains strong winter and spring flows. The falls’ plunge character reflects a hard basalt ledge that the river has not yet fully eroded, creating a vertical drop into the pool below. The surrounding landscape of second-growth Douglas fir and bigleaf maple transitions toward the agricultural Willamette Valley floor just miles to the east.
