History & Background
Fall Creek Falls in Lincoln County is a small cascade on a Fall Creek tributary near Newport, managed as part of a county recreational corridor along the Siletz River drainage. The Newport area is one of Oregon’s most popular coastal destinations, centered on the scenic Yaquina Bay and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. The inland hills east of Newport, where this falls is located, offer a quieter complement to the busy beachfront, with forested streams and modest waterfalls typical of the central Oregon Coast Range. Fall Creek drains toward the Siletz River system, which the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians have fished for salmon and steelhead since time immemorial.
Geology
Fall Creek Falls cascades over basaltic bedrock of the Oregon Coast Range at approximately 160 feet elevation in Lincoln County. The northern Coast Range here receives 70–100 inches of annual precipitation, sustaining perennial stream flow in small creeks. The surrounding coastal forest of Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and red alder reflects the cool, wet climate of the central coast. The falls’ modest height reflects the gentle terrain of the lower Coast Range foothills near Newport, where elevation gains are modest compared to the more rugged terrain further inland.
