History & Background
Elk Creek Falls is a dramatic 150-foot horsetail waterfall within the Siskiyou National Forest in Coos County, notable for being accessible via a barrier-free trail that provides wheelchair and mobility-device access to one of the taller roadside waterfalls on the southern Oregon Coast. The Elk Creek watershed drains through old-growth influenced forest in the interior Coast Range, an area managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the broader Siskiyou National Forest. Elk Creek is an important salmon and steelhead spawning stream, and the surrounding forest has been subject to conservation attention to protect fish habitat and the old-growth characteristics of this remote but accessible canyon.
Geology
Elk Creek Falls plunges 150 feet over a sheer basalt wall in the Coos County interior Coast Range at approximately 1,589 feet elevation. The falls’ dramatic height reflects the steep gradient of Elk Creek as it descends through the Klamath Mountains geological province — one of Oregon’s oldest and most geologically complex terranes. The surrounding old-growth forest of Douglas fir, Port Orford cedar, and tanoak reflects the Klamath Mountains’ unique biodiversity, which sits at the crossroads of the Pacific Northwest and California floristic zones. The moist canyon environment supports dense mosses and ferns typical of the southern Oregon Coast Range.
