History & Background
White River Falls is one of the most significant waterfalls in Eastern Oregon and a rare example of a major waterfall in an otherwise arid region. The site is historically notable for the remains of an early hydroelectric power plant built in the early 1900s, which once supplied electricity to nearby communities. Today, the area is preserved as White River Falls State Park, offering visitors access to both the waterfall and its historic ruins.
Geology
White River Falls cascades through a narrow canyon carved into volcanic rock and sedimentary layers over thousands of years. The waterfall consists of multiple drops, with the upper and lower falls separated by steep canyon walls. The exposed rock layers reflect a complex geological history shaped by volcanic activity, erosion, and changing river flow in this high desert environment.
