History & Background
Wahclella Falls is located within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and is accessed via a trail that follows Tanner Creek through a narrow basalt canyon. The area has long been appreciated for its dramatic scenery, moss-covered cliffs, and sheltered setting. The trail was rebuilt and improved after severe flooding events, helping preserve access while protecting the surrounding landscape.
Geology
Wahclella Falls flows through a steep canyon carved by Tanner Creek, cutting into layers of Columbia River Basalt. The narrow gorge funnels water through smooth basalt walls, creating a dramatic amphitheater effect at the base of the falls. The combination of cascading drops and vertical cliff faces makes the waterfall especially scenic during high flow.
