History & Background
South Falls is the most famous waterfall in Silver Falls State Park and one of Oregon’s most photographed natural landmarks. The park was developed in the early 20th century, and the Trail of Ten Falls was designed to showcase the area’s unique waterfalls and canyon scenery. South Falls is particularly notable for the walkway that allows visitors to pass directly behind the waterfall.
Geology
South Falls plunges over a resistant layer of Columbia River Basalt, creating a wide overhang behind the cascade. Over thousands of years, erosion has carved a recess behind the falls, forming the iconic behind-the-falls passage. The surrounding canyon walls expose multiple layers of volcanic rock formed by ancient lava flows.
